Solar PV Fuses should be installed as part of your Solar Energy system to protect conductors, solar panels and MPPT charge controllers against fault conditions.
Solar PV (PhotoVoltic) fuses can be installed in a 10×38 DIN rail mount fuse holder, or inline MC4 fuse holders, depending on your needs. One fuse per Solar Panel, or PV string is sufficient, as long as the solar sting total current isn’t more than the fuses available. Hight voltage strings would typically have a current rating of 8A – 9A.
These fuses are typically rated at 1000V DC and are perfect for Solar installations. As a golden rule of thumb, select a fuse rating which is at least 25% more than your expected system Amperage. For example, if you use 2 strings of 3x 255W solar panels, with a Short Circuit Current of 8.81A, use 12A fuses. A 10A fuse might blow quickly on a very hot day, or due to “flash lighting”.
Although fuses can also protect the MPPT charge controller from lighting, it would be better to install a “Classs 1 & 2 Surge Arrester” for better protection from lighting and surges.
It is always advisable to keep a few spare fuses in-hand in case you need to replace one.
